Prenatal diagnostics and ultrasound at Irys Medical Center

What Are Prenatal Diagnostics?

Tests done during pregnancy to see if baby is growing well and has any health concerns.

We offer non-invasive and diagnostic options — all explained simply.

Screening vs Diagnostic Tests (Prenatal)

Test Type Invasiveness / Risk Accuracy Level Result Given
Screening (e.g., NIPT, Anomaly Scan) Non-invasive; No risk to the fetus. Very high (identifies likelihood) Indicates a Low Chance or High Chance of a condition.
Diagnostic (e.g., CVS, Amniocentesis) Invasive; Tiny risk (e.g., miscarriage), requires medical intervention. Near 100% (confirms presence/absence) Provides a definitive Yes/No answer regarding the specific condition.

NIPT — Blood Test from Mom

How It Works

Small blood draw from your arm.
Baby’s DNA floats in your blood.
We test for Down syndrome, trisomy 18, 13.

From: 10 weeks

Result: 7–10 days

Risk: None

Accuracy: 99% for Down syndrome

Anomaly Scan — Detailed Ultrasound

What the Scan Checks
  • Detailed look at the Brain & spine structure
  • Assessment of the Heart (ensuring four chambers and correct blood flow)
  • Checking Kidneys & stomach function and development
  • Verifying all major parts: Arms, legs, face, and fetal measurements
Practical Details

Timeframe: 18–22 weeks of pregnancy
Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
Pain/Discomfort: None (non-invasive procedure)
Photos: You get baby pictures (prints or digital files) to take home!

CVS — Placenta Sample

Thin needle through tummy or cervix.
Takes tiny bit of placenta.
Tests chromosomes.

From: 11–13 weeks

Result: 7–14 days

Risk: 1 in 1,000 miscarriage

Amniocentesis — Fluid Sample

Needle into amniotic sac.
Takes fluid with baby cells.
Full genetic test.

From: 15–20 weeks

Result: 10–14 days

Risk: 1 in 1,000 miscarriage

When to Do Each Test (Prenatal Timeline)

Optimal Weeks Test Name Detailed Purpose
10+ (as early as) NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) Screens for common chromosomal conditions (e.g., Down syndrome) using maternal blood.
11–13 CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) Diagnostic test to confirm early a genetic condition; samples placental tissue.
18–22 Anomaly Scan (Detailed Ultrasound) Checks the baby's anatomy, ensuring proper development of organs, limbs, and heart.
15–20 Amniocentesis (Amnio) Diagnostic test for full diagnosis of genetic and chromosomal issues; samples amniotic fluid.

How Accurate Are They?

NIPT

99% for Down syndrome

CVS / Amnio

100% — gold standard

Are They Safe?

NIPT & Anomaly Scan: 100% safe — no risk to baby.

CVS & Amnio: Tiny risk (1 in 1,000) — we only do if needed.

We talk through every step. You decide.
