Ectopic pregnancy ultrasound and surgery at Irys Medical Center

What is Ectopic Pregnancy?

The fertilized egg attaches outside the uterus—most often implanting in one of the fallopian tubes (tubal pregnancy).

The pregnancy cannot grow into a baby outside the womb. As it grows, it can cause the fallopian tube to stretch and potentially rupture, leading to dangerous internal bleeding and requiring immediate medical care.

Who Gets It? (Key Risk Factors)

Risks
  • History of Past Pelvic Infection (PID), which can damage the tubes.
  • Having had a Previous ectopic pregnancy.
  • Smoking cigarettes.
  • Conception through IVF pregnancy or other assisted reproduction.
  • Prior tube surgery, ligation, or pelvic surgery.

Warning Signs (Seek Care Immediately)

Sign What It Feels Like (Detailed)
Sharp Pelvic Pain Intense pain that is one-sided, sudden, or severe and persistent.
Unusual Bleeding Bleeding that may range from light spotting to heavier bleeding; often darker or watery.
Referred Shoulder Pain Pain in the tip of the shoulder caused by internal bleeding irritating the diaphragm.
Dizziness or Fainting Feeling faint, dizzy, or weak due to blood loss or low blood pressure.

How We Check (Confirmation)

Transvaginal Ultrasound

Used to visualize the location of the pregnancy (or confirm its absence in the uterus).
Procedure is done in roughly 10 minutes at the clinic.

Quantitative hCG Blood Test

Checks the level of the pregnancy hormone (hCG).
Abnormal or slow-rising levels suggest an ectopic pregnancy; results are often available the same day.

Treatment Options

Early & Stable (Medical Management)

Involves a single Methotrexate injection.
This medication effectively stops the cell growth of the pregnancy, which is then absorbed by the body, avoiding surgery.

Ruptured or Large (Surgical Management)

Requires Keyhole Surgery (Laparoscopy).
This is done to immediately remove the pregnancy and stop dangerous bleeding, or for larger pregnancies.

Transvaginal Ultrasound (Detailed)

How: A small, specialized probe is gently placed in the vagina for close-up imaging.

Time: The entire examination typically takes only 10 minutes.

Pain: You may feel only mild pressure, but it is generally pain-free.

Result: Immediate results are available during the same visit for timely decision-making.

hCG Blood Test (Monitoring Hormone Levels)

This quantitative test measures the level of the pregnancy hormone every 48 hours.
A low or abnormally slow rise in hCG levels is a strong indicator of an ectopic pregnancy.

Methotrexate Injection (Medical Treatment)

  • One shot stops cell growth of the ectopic pregnancy.
  • It is a non-surgical treatment, allowing the body to naturally absorb the tissue.
  • Requires follow-up blood tests weekly until hCG levels drop to zero.
  • Works only if the pregnancy is small, stable, and the tube is not ruptured.

Keyhole Surgery (Laparoscopy)

The procedure involves tiny cuts, a camera, and specialized tools.
It is used to remove the ectopic pregnancy from the tube and, if possible, preserves the tube for future fertility.

  • Patients often go home the same day of the surgery.
  • You can usually return to normal activities or work in about 1 week.
  • Causes significantly less pain and scarring than traditional open surgery.
